Pumpkin seeds: holidays cause prices to rise

DALIAN. With two major holidays coming up in China, roasters and bakeries are stocking up on pumpkin seeds, pushing up prices. The shine-skin harvest is in full swing, while the GWS harvest does not start until next month.

Commodity and export prices up

The price of Chinese shine skins has risen slightly since last week. Market players cite increased demand from roasters and bakeries as the reason, as China celebrates both the Mid-Autumn Festival on 29 September and the National Day on 1 October. Pumpkin seeds and baked goods made from them are popular on both holidays. This has pushed up commodity prices for the new crop from an initial CNY 17-17.5/kg to CNY 18-18.5/kg as farmers have adjusted their prices to reflect rising market prices.
