DALIAN. Although the actual size of the cultivated area currently represents a major point of contention on the Chinese pumpkin seed market, everyone agrees on the direction in which the prices are developing.

Only the trend is clear
Since last week, the prices have risen noticeably, but still vary considerably from one supplier to another. Pumpkin seeds, GWS, Grade A are being offered for 2.19-2.39 USD/mt CFR Hamburg. Pumpkin seeds, Shine Skin, Grade A are at a level of 2.12-2.24 USD/mt. For fear of operating at a loss, not every supplier is currently offering long-term contracts and they are limiting themselves to a lead time of maximum two months.

It is still too early
Some Chinese traders are strongly convinced that at least the acreages for GWS seeds will be 40-50% smaller than last year. In some regions, the farmers are not even finished with sowing the fields, and many suppliers are hesitating to draw premature conclusions. A clear picture regarding the new crop should be available at the end of May. Apart from the fact that the demand should be kept alive, however, Chinese pumpkin seed suppliers are not eager to let the prices drop below the current level again.
