DALIAN. Low prices for the 2025 crop currently offer growers little incentive to increase their acreage in 2026; a smaller crop is likely to drive prices up again. The Chinese New Year is dampening trade this week.

Price declines are unlikely

The market for pumpkin seeds is stable overall, and the Chinese New Year is largely paralysing trade this week, so that only minor changes in prices are evident. Another reason for the stability is the continued limited availability along the entire supply chain. Stocks are low, and many farmers are holding back goods as they expect demand to pick up after the holidays. Against this backdrop, significant price declines appear unlikely in the short term, according to the experts at Chelmer Foods.

Farmers exercise caution

With a view to the coming season, the decision on cultivation for the 2026 crop is likely to be decisive. An expansion of the acreage could help ease the situation in the further course of the year, while a reduction would tend to drive up prices. At present, the mood among growers is still subdued. The 2025 crop was poor, and despite the smaller volume, prices did not reach the level expected by many. Farmers are therefore acting cautiously, according to Chelmer Foods.
