Pumpkin seeds: Traders in Europe refuse to hit panic button

DALIAN. Although the prices are on the rise, traders in Europe are remarkably calm.

 

Unhulled kernels are difficult to obtain

Production is set to drop considerably for GWS kernels this year, which is causing prices to rise. The reason for this is last year’s decline in prices, which has rendered the cultivation of other products far more attractive for the farmers. Price drops are out of the question for this year. Pumpkin kernels, GWS, Grade A are currently trading for 3,270 USD/mt CFR Hamburg.

Traders in Europe contradict exporters in China

Only a small amount of GWS are produced for the export market. Shine Skins are, however, mainly produced for domestic consumption. This year’s production is expected to be satisfactory, despite the drop in acreage. The prices for Shine Skins have also risen with Shine Skins, Grade A trading for 2,570 USD/mt. Although offers for the new crop have still to be issued, exporters in China are confident that prices will remain stable. Contrary to this, traders in Europe, however, expect prices to drop in January as this has frequently happened in the past.
