Raisins: prospects differ

MASHHAD. Harvesting is underway in Iran’s South Khorasan Razavi Province. While prospects are quite encouraging here, this is not the case in the north. Although raisin production is set to decline, traders are confident that exports will remain on last year’s level.

The joker

Growers cultivate grapes on 18,500 ha in North Khorasan. Producers, however, only turn 45% of the grapes produced here into raisins, the rest is consumed fresh. Traders from western parts of Iran tend export white seedless varieties produced in North Khorasan to Turkey and Europe. Although drought is expected to reduce this year’s raisin production by 20-25%, intention is to export similar volumes as last year.
