Sesame seeds: concerns over possible slump in exports

NEW DELHI. Sowing is underway in some parts of Gujarat. The situation in China is a matter of concern. Problem is that the country is an important export destination.

Prices are still stable

According to the Federation of Indian Spice Stakeholders (FISS), annual sesame seed exports from India range at 250,000 metric tonnes. As much as 20% of shipments are destined for China. Problem, however, is that the outbreak of the coronavirus has considerably curbed export demand. Market players reckon that export volumes may decline by as much as 10-15% over the next one to two months.
