Sesame seeds: crop damage drives up prices

NEW DELHI. Heavy rainfall surprised Indian sesame seed farmers in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh in the middle of the harvest season. According to market players, some regions in Uttar Pradesh were particularly hard hit by the rains.

Majority of the crop still to be harvested

Farmers in Uttar Pradesh have so far been able to deliver an estimated 15% of the new crop to commercial markets, but most of the crop is still in the fields, according to market players. Traders estimate that around 20-25% of the crop has been damaged, but there is no official information on potential losses yet.
