NEW DELHI. The summer crop in India could be much higher than previously expected. This puts pressure on prices. In the coming weeks, a new sesame seed tender is to be announced to fill the gap left by the last one.

High availability weighs on prices

For the third week in a row, prices in the Indian sesame seed market have declined and export prices are also following this trend. The market is coming under considerable pressure, not least because of the cultivation figures for the 2023 summer crop. According to government data, about 125,000 mt have been sown, while traders reckon a significantly larger area. This in turn would mean that the summer crop could be significantly larger than previously expected.
