Sesame seeds: geopolitical shock for India

NEW DELHI. With China investing heavily in Pakistan's sesame seed production there is a very real threat that India will lose at least one powerful buyer. Iran also shares a border with Pakistan and may very well switch to its direct neighbour. These changes in the geopolitical landscape will certainly impact India's sesame seed market.

India on the brink of losing valuable customers

Prices have continued their downward slide in India as hulled white seamse seeds with a 99.95% purity are presently trading at USD 1,795/mt FOB India. With the new crop arriving in the market and reports stating that quality and quantities are good this trend should continue. Competition certainly is another issue to consider as China has stepped up support for Pakistan by supplying high quality seeds and modern agricultural techinques to improve production.
