Sesame seeds: good prospects

NEW DELHI. In India the prospects for sesame seeds are highly encouraging. On 04 May the Indian Oilseeds and Produce Export Promotion Council (IOPEPC) will issue a first estimate for the summer crop. Weak demand is, however, proving a challenge for exporters.

The pressure is on

At 10,950 mt India recently secured more than half of the tendered volume over 25,500 mt. Yet, this is not enough to provide the local market with support and the latest rise was only temporary. Quotations have dipped again. Overseas and domestic demand are low. India exported 22,967 mt of sesame seeds worth USD 50,7 million in March. South Korea was the main export destination as shipments reached 1,932 mt worth USD 4.3 million, followed by the USA (1,917 mt worth USD 4.7 million) and Iraq (1,907 mt worth USD 4.3 million).
