Sesame seeds: Gujarat increases acreage by 28%

NEW DELHI. Indian traders hope that sesame seed prices have reached their lowest point for the time being. Meanwhile in Gujarat, black sesame seeds are said to be affected by crop damage.

Hardly any demand despite low prices

In recent weeks, sesame seed prices in India have largely stabilised, while export prices have only been subject to nominal fluctuations of minor significance. Despite the comparatively low prices, Indian exporters report low demand from overseas. Currently it looks as if the crop in the main growing regions such as Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh is developing well, only in Gujarat the plants suffered from heavy rainfall. Up to 40% of black sesame seed production is said to be affected. So far, a total of 148,981
