Sesame seeds: high freight rates cost exporters dearly

NEW DELHI/MOGADISHU. Heigh freight rates are making it impossible for exporters in India to raise the prices for sesame seeds. Pakistan is bracing for rain. Sowing is underway in Somalia, where the crop is harvested in autumn.

Demand is lacking

Sesame seed prices may have already lost more than 15% in past four to five months, yet this pattern is expected to continue with reduced intensity. Trouble is that international demand is weakest for supplies from India and the situation will not change until freight rates go down.

Around 70,000-75,000 mt of the summer crop, which is estimated at 90,000-100,000 mt, have already arrived in Gujarat. Traders are expected to hold their stocks and relase them gradually while closely monitoring market conditions. For black sesame seeds it should
