Sesame seeds: highly motivated producers

NEW DELHI. Attractive prices have prompted many farmers to sow more sesame seeds in India this year. This is, however, not the only reasen why the market is under pressure.

Rain causes little damage

Prices have declined a bit again after last week's slump. Issue is that attractive prices prompted farmers to step up sowing and estimates are highly optimistic. The area sown will, for instance, rise to 120,000 ha in Gujarat and farmers have already completed 78,000 ha here. Although heavy rains have been reported in all states, they have had little impact so far. Farmers in Andrah Pradesh have, however, reported possible damages.
