Sesame seeds: India is filling up the gaps

NEW DELHI. After levelling off at a similar level as in previous years over the last few weeks, the sesame seed prices have drastically increased since the beginning of this week.

 

China is buying it all up
As predicted by market participants, Chinese importers have intensified their purchasing activities. In terms of price, African sesame seeds, preferred by Chinese buyers, cannot compete with Indian offers. The South African countries are set to harvest more in the coming weeks. As soon as these crops are available, we should see a recovery of Chinese demand these origins. Until then, the gap in supply needs to be filled, as distributors and processors are already stocking up for the Chinese New Year celebrations in mid-February
