NEW DELHI. India has extended the lockdown to prevent the coronavirus from spreading by two weeks. While the country is divided into three zones, depending on the risk of contracting Covid-19, exceptions have been issued to stimulate trade. Sesame seed exports are possible.

Copies are accepted

Initially, the second phase of the lockdown was due to end on 4 May. In a bid to curb the spread of the disease the government has, however, decided to extend the lockdown measures by two weeks. The country is divided into green, orange and red zones with different restrictions in place.

Emergency regulations are in place for sesame seed containers to be accepted in Europe. The veterinary office in Hamburg, for instance, accepts health certificate and test report copies. However, the original documents, which are provided by the veterinary office in India, need to be submitted as soon as possible. Demand is largely subdued. Due to the Labour Day holiday the market in China will remain closed until 6 May and US demand has stalled. There are, however, some enquiries from Europe and the prices have remained stable with hulled sesame seeds trading at USD 1,675 per metric tonne.
