NEW DELHI. Heavy rains have partly damaged the new crop. Although interest is high, buyers are avoiding low-quality sesame seeds. China's laid back attitude is causing some problems.

Under pressure

India's sesame seed market is highly dynamic. While arrivals picked up last week, which sold well due to the holidays, heavy rains impacted the quality and quantity of the crop in Uttar and Madhya Pradesh. Traders are by no means interested in this crop as the damages are easily visible and low quality is slowing sales. The market is, however, still assessing the extent of the damage and first production estimates for the entire crop will only emerge in the next week or so.
