Sesame seeds: reduced acreage for Rabi crop

NEW DELHI/OUAGADOUGOU. Imports are putting pressure on prices on the Indian sesame seed market and could have an impact on sowing for the summer crop. In Burkina Faso, traders are holding back their goods.

Competitive pressure

In addition to its domestic sesame seed production, India has always purchased large quantities of sesame seed from African origins to meet the demand for hulled goods in particular. In 2024, imports totalled 150,496 mt, an increase of over a fifth compared to the previous year.

Growers and traders are concerned about this development. Imported goods are generally much cheaper, which is why prices on the domestic market have to be adjusted to some extent in order to remain competitive, regardless of the actual costs incurred for producti
