NEW DELHI/N’DJAMENA. A lack of demand and high competitive pressure on the international market is putting pressure on prices for Indian sesame seeds. Meanwhile, sesame seeds from Chad are in good demand, which is also reflected in shipments to the EU.

Indian sesame seeds are becoming cheaper

Despite the steady downward corrections in recent weeks, prices for Indian sesame seeds are relatively high by international standards. Market players had hoped for demand from China, but sesame seeds from Nigeria and Tanzania were favoured there.

Year-on-year, exports from Nigeria increased by 120,000 mt to 283,369 mt in the January-November 2024 period and shipments from Tanzania also increased from 126,000 mt to 138,000 mt, while India's exports were mainly defined by higher shipments to South Korea.
