Sesame seeds: significant yield losses expected

NEW DELHI/ADDIS ABABA. Unfavourable weather conditions are expected to cause the Indian sesame seed crop to decline by 20-25%. Market players are dissatisfied with demand. Farmers in Ethiopia have begun harvesting.

Up to 25% smaller crop in India

Persistent rainfall during the growing season has dealt a massive blow to the Indian sesame seed crop. For this year's Kharif crop, sesame farmers across the country had sown a total of 1.043 million hectares, only slightly less than last year (1.096 million hectares). Weather-related yield losses are expected to reduce production by around 20-25% – in autumn 2024, Indian sesame farmers harvested a total of 140,000-150,000 mt of sesame seeds.

The majority of the Indian sesame seed crop is grown during the kharif season.
