Sesame seeds: sowing progress exceeds last year by 76%

NEW DELHI. Indian sesame seed farmers are fully engaged in sowing the summer crop. Work on the fields has also started in the Saurashtra region in the Indian state of Gujarat, and the total area in Gujarat is already higher than the results of previous years.

38,560 ha sown so far

In West Bengal, farmers are still busy harvesting potatoes, but in some regions the cultivation of brown sesame seeds has already started. In the Saurashtra region, sesame seed farmers are also tilling the fields for the summer crop. According to official figures, 38,561 ha have been sown in Gujarat so far for the coming crop, whereas this time last year the area was about 76% smaller at 21,884 ha. Overall, Gujarat's farmers have also put in a lot of effort; the 3-year average for India's summer sowing is currently 31,014 ha.
