NEW DELHI. Market players report that some farmers started harvesting the summer crop too eartly. As much as one third of the sesame seed arrivals in Saurashtra are, for instance, claimed to not meet quality standards.

35-40% harvested too early

New crop arrivals are steadily increasing. Traders, however, complained about the first deliveries. Problem is that above-average rains have reportdely delayed the development of the seeds in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat. An estimated 35-40% of the crop is unripe. As the harvest has, however, only started, this problem is not expected to persist.

Up to 70.000 metric tonnes of white sesame seeds

The size of the summer crop is estimated at 100,000 metric tonnes. White sesame seeds are expected to account for 65,000-70,000 metric tonnes and black sesame seeds for 15,000-20,000 metric tonnes. High import volumes from Africa are adding pressure to the market. The export prices have declined again for sesame seeds from India. Natural sesame seeds are trading at USD 1.40 per kg CIF Hamburg and black sesame seeds at USD 2.15 per kg. Exporters are already busy stocking up on supplies. At the same time large supplies and the subdued demand from overseas have prompted market players to reckon with a sustained downward trend.
