MANISA. In their efforts to control the mildew on the vines, Turkish sultana farmers are taking a risk by reducing the share of organic sultanas.

As a result, prices for organic sultanas have risen again, but are still far below last year's level of 3,000 USD/mt FOB Izmir. At 1,300 USD/mt FOB Izmir, offers for the new crop are at the same level as for prompt deliveries.

Exports are going well

Turkish traders report that there could be more frequent customs inspections for ochratoxin in dried fruit. In addition to aflatoxins, ochratoxin A is the most common mycotoxin found in dried fruit and nuts. The formation of the substance is particularly favoured by insufficient drying and poor storage conditions.

Since the beginning of 2016/17, Turkish dried fruit exporters have exported about 227,780 mt of sultanas, a good 60,000 mt more than last year at this time. In addition to the better availability, the increased export volume by more than one third is also attributed to the 25% lower export prices.
