Sultanas: Frost damages in Turkey

MANISA. Market participants in Turkey can be highly satisfied with their sales this season. The weather with its possible risk of frost is, however, drawing more and more attention.

Supplies are melting away

Turkey has already shipped more than 133,300 mt abroad since the beginning of the season. Export and upcountry demand have melted supplies down to half of the amount available at the beginning of the season. Last year’s crop produced about 300,000 mt. Stocks are low with the farmers. Most of the remaining supplies are held by traders and exporters.

The risk of frost

The prices are stable and great fluctuations are not expected in the weeks to come. Some market participants are, nevertheless, uneasy since the risk of frost damages cannot be excluded. This could very quickly change the current market situation. Currently there is, however, no great cause for concern since mild temperatures are expected in spring. With an estimated 250,000-300,000 mt production outlooks appear quite promising.
