MANISA. Although the market was set to a slow start to the new season, the situation has now changed dramatically. The farmgate prices have basically collapsed.

No exports

Since the market only reopened on Monday no exports have so far taken place this season. Last year, however, 2,650 mt had already been shipped.

Farmgate prices drop considerably

Reports state that the farmgate prices have dropped as low as 3.70 TRY/kg this week - 26% less than last week. The producers are anything but pleased as they are aiming for prices as high as 5.00 Try/kg. Market players reckon that 4.00 Try/kg are more realistic.

Rumour has it that the government may support the farmers in pushing through higher prices. It, however, remains to be seen which measures will be taken. Exporters are, nevertheless, cautious in closing contracts.

Price fluctuations cannot be ruled out until October. It is reckoned that the prices for sultanas type 9, grade A will stabilise somewhere between 1,375 USD/mt and 1,450 USD/mt FOB Izmir. Offers currently differ on a range of 1,320-1,500 USD/mt FOB. Traders and producers alike are very well pleased with the quality of organic sultanas and offers currently range at 2,100 USD/mt FOB Izmir, but may climb.

The quality is convincing

The drying phase is still to be completed. It is, however, estimated that about half of this year’s production has already been stored. The low temperatures at night have caused drying to take a couple of days longer. Despite some light rains at the beginning of the harvest, producers are satisfied with the quality and the yield of the lighter types (types 10 and 11) are good.
