Sultanas: Production to go down by 10%

MANISA. In Turkey, this year’s crop is expected to fall short of last year's, with prices likely to be up by the beginning of the season.

 

Demand is high for Thompsons
In 2017, the Turkish sultana crop amounted to approx. 310,000 mt. To date, almost 212,000 mt have been shipped abroad. The domestic demand of approx. 50,000 mt should also be considered. Market players do not expect any carry overs.

Estimates for the 2018 Turkish sultana production currently amount to 270,000–280,000 mt, around 10% less than last year. The high prices for Thompson raisins drive many farmers to cultivate this variety, with demand shifting to Turkey and other markets, after the disappointing prod
