Sunflower seeds: 90% of EU imports come from Ukraine

SOFIA/KYIV. In Ukraine, a good 15% of the forecast sunflower seed crop has now been harvested, while concern is high in Bulgaria in view of the disappointing production results. Various factors are causing enormous uncertainty in the market on both the buyer and seller side.

Ukrainian harvest progresses

In Ukraine, commodity prices for unhulled sunflower seeds increased in the second half of September, according to APK-Inform. The harvest is progressing well, but there are repeated delays due to rainfall. By the end of last week, 1.294 million mt of sunflower seeds had been harvested on an area of 672,000 ha. The average yield is thus 1.92 mt/ha. Nevertheless, Ukraine still has plenty of carry-over stocks from last year, which is why higher commodity prices are rather surprising.
