SOFIA. Snow is still piling up in Bulgarian cultivation areas and roads are still impassable for trucks which is impeding exports.

Some processors have had electricity problems and many workers are on sick-leave which has further delayed deliveries from Bulgaria.

Prices unexpectedly stable
Demand has been stable and sunflower seeds, bakery from Eastern Europe are still on last week’s price level. On the other hand, the development of Bulgarian raw commodity prices has taken an interesting turn. In the course of the last seven days prices first dropped to 353 EUR/mt CPT Varna only to immediately rise again to 358 EUR/mt.

Russia sets a new record
The Russian statistics service (Rosstat) estimates the production of sunflower seeds for 2016/17 to be at 10,7 m mt – a new record. This increase is due both to a larger area under cultivation (+7% to 7,5 m hectares) and a higher yield (+4,1% to 1,41 mt/hectare) compared to the preceding year in which already a very good yield of 9,5 m mt was achieved.
