SOFIA/KYIV. Last week, the European Commission adjusted its production estimates for the 2022 EU sunflower seed crop. The main growing country, Romania, achieved a significant deficit compared to last year.

Mostly smaller crops

Compared to last month's forecast, the European Commission's crop estimate of 10.25 million mt was another 2.3% lower, while a year-on-year decline of 3.1% was expected. With the exception of Bulgaria (+1.1% to 2.01 million mt) and Spain (+26.7% to 963,000 mt), crops in the major European producing countries had declined noticeably. France's crop is expected to amount to 1.858 million mt, about 2.8% less than last year, and in Hungary a decline of 16.2% to 1.474 mt is to be expected.
