Sunflower seeds: all eyes on sowing

KYIV/DALIAN. Patience is required for the new EU production estimates for sunflower seeds to be issued. Pressue is mounting in Bulgaria. High premiums are decisive for sowing in Ukraine. Warm weather will spur traders into action in China. EU imports are still sluggish.

Patience required for EU production estimates

At the end of February the European Commission updated the 2024 EU production estimate for sunflower seeds. The total prodcution estimate has remained fixed at 8.048 million mt with sharp declines reported in the main producing member states of Hungary, France and Bulgaria along with Romania. Although the production estimate for Germany has been revised upwards the country has still witnessed a 21% decrease in production. The production estimates for 2025 will only be issued in April.
