SOFIA. After the cool month of May, comparatively low temperatures are still being expected in Bulgaria for the beginning of June. Smaller processing facilities could benefit from this situation and maintain their factory operations for a few more weeks.

Weighing the risks

Bigger companies are already busily concluding contracts forthe new crop. Medium-sized and smaller processors are still holding back to minimise their risks as much as possible. Currently, the crop estimates are very good. In Bulgaria, Russia and the Ukraine, the acreages are supposed to be bigger than last year. Due to the favourable precipitation in the last few months, yield estimates for the Bulgarian crop were increased to 2.56 mt/ha.

Price overview

Black sunflower seeds, in-shell with 96% purity, are being offered at slightly lower prices. Further price drops cannot be ruled out. Bakery seeds for prompt delivery are stable. The new crop is being offered at 0.61 EUR/kg FCA Bulgaria, and some traders think that the prices could still drop to 0.57 EUR/kg.
