Sunflower seeds: prices hit 9-year high

SOFIA/BRUSSELS. The farmers are nearly finished harvesting sunflower seeds in Russia and Ukraine. The prices for bakery kernels have hit a nine-year high. EU production estimates cannot hold up to initial expectations.

EU revises estimates

The farmers have harvested 90% of the area sown in Ukraine so far. Average yields range at 2.31 mt/ha and the area harvested so far is 5.9 million ha, meaning that production presently ranges at 13.5 million mt. At 17 million mt the USDA's estimate for Ukraine is highly optimistic. The farmers in Russia are not quite as far on as their colleagues in Ukraine as the area harvested here ranges at 7.6 million ha so far, which is around 80% of the area sown.
