Sunflower seeds: slump in yields and rise in prices

SOFIA. Mixed yields are being reported in Bulgaria. The reference prices for the new crop are a far cry from the prices on offer over the last few years.

Difficult situation

Traders in Bulgaria are painting a gloomy picture. A large part of arrivals had to be processed into oil rather than into bakery kernels as too many losses would have been incurred from hulling. Agricultural media report that yields range as low as 1.8-2.6 mt/ha, whereas average yields ranged much higher at 2.67 mt/ha last year according to Coceral.
