Sunflower seeds: southern growing regions consistently too dry

KYIV/SOFIA. The lack of rainfall and high temperatures were once again a problem for sunflower seed farmers this year. Yields are disappointing, especially in the southern growing regions.

Low yields in southern Ukraine...

Around half of the country's sunflower crops are grown in the south and parts of central Ukraine. For several years in a row now, lack of rainfall and summer heat have prevented crops in Ukraine from reaching their full potential. This year, too, yields have been significantly lower than initially expected. The shortfall is expected to be offset, at least in part, by better yields in the northern and western growing regions.
