SOFIA/DALIAN. Disappointing crops in the European sunflower seed market are driving some suppliers to take drastic measures. In the Chinese market, however, the new crop is causing prices to fall.

The Ukrainian sunflower seed harvest is nearing completion. However, the results so far are calling even the already reduced estimates into question. Official crop forecasts, including those of the US Department of Agriculture, speak of 12.5 million mt of sunflower seeds. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture, 94% of the acrege (4.63 million hectares) have already been harvested, producing around 9.54 million mt of sunflower seeds, which corresponds to a yield of 2.06 mt/ha.
