Walnuts: 16% rise in global production

SACRAMENTO/REUS. Although the production estimates issued by the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) and the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) differ, they illustrate a similar trend. Global walnut production may hit a new record.

Stuttering powerhouse

While the INC estimates global inshell production at 2.629 million mt, the FAS estimate of 2.604 million mt only differs nominally. Both estimates are, however, sharply up on last year's production of 2.274 million mt (INC) and 2.315 million mt (FAS). Higher yields are set to drive up production in China by 27% to 1.4 million mt, whereas February night frosts and extreme summer heat will reduce output in the United States despite new trees coming into production.
