SACRAMENTO/BEIJING. As delayed shipments are finally arriving in Europe the walnut market has come under pressure. Christmas supplies are now weighing on prices.

Supplies are not needed

Trading is still slow to take off. Large volumes are currently arriving in Europe's ports as a lack of staff and containers delayed shipments that were intitially intended for Christmas. This supply glut has prompted a sharp decline this week with prices ranging up to EUR 0.55/kg (USD 0.63/kg) lower. These declines are, however, failing to attract buyers, who currently hold sufficient supplies.

Exports hit record in China

As East Fruit reports China exported record volumes of walnuts in 2021. Exports, in fact, doubled to c 47,000 mt for kernels and to 115,000 mt for inshells. The export value climbed to around USD 420 million, which also set a record. Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia rank as most important export destinations for China. Since prices have declined for US and Chilean walnuts the same is also anticipated for walnuts from China.
