Walnuts: EU weak by international comparison

SACRAMENTO. While the current estimates by the USDA are showing a balance between production and consumption, there are concerns over the EU market.

 

Production deficit expected

The USDA estimates the global production of in-shells to be 2.07 million mt for the current season. Although this represents a decrease of more than 4% compared to last year, this figure is well above the 6-year average of 1.88 million mt. Reasons for the production deficit are mainly due to the dry weather in China, the floods and increased insect infestation in the USA, as well as the unfavorable weather in Turkey.
