SANTIAGO. After witnessing a disastrous crop last year, Chile’s exports are back on track for walnuts. Exciting as the current figures may seem, they also show another clear trend.

Inshell shipments surge

Exports for Chile displayed a remarkable shift in the first month of the new season. This year’s production has recovered to 168,000 mt boosting inshell exports in particular. They have more than doubled to 2,755 mt in comparison with last year with Turkey as leading destination. Chile’s exports to Turkey have, in fact, risen more than threefold. Shipments to Italy also range more than 1.5 times higher than last year. While exports to Morocco are showing a less exciting rise of 6%. India has, unlike last year, turned active. Shipments to Spain and Peru have also risen substantially.

Exciting as these figures seem, it should be noted that they pale in comparison with the volumes shipped in 2023 when the crop ranged at 181,648 mt according to INC data. Accumulated walnut shipments presented by ChileNut show that although inshell shipments started to surge five weeks ago, they are underperforming on 2023. That year Chile’s inshell shipments to Turkey exceeded 2,500 mt in the first month of the season. Shipments to Morocco ranged at a much higher 1,400 mt and shipments to India came close to 1,500 mt.

Shelled walnut shipments also up

Shelled walnut shipments have risen by a more moderate 2%. Germany leads the chart with an impressive 34% growth. Exports to Brazil are also 23% up and Spain has, unlike last year, purchased volumes. Contrary to this, however, shipments to Ecuador, France and Turkey are showing sharp declines.
