Walnuts: successful export season

SANTIAGO. Demand for Chilean walnuts is clearly up this season. Yet, inshell exports to India are down. EU spending on shelled walnuts is unprecedented.

Dent in inshell exports to India

October was a highly successful month for Chile as inshell exports surged by 35% to 9,123 mt and shelled walnut exports by 55% to 5,603 mt as compared with October last year according to ChileNut. Total inshell exports rose by 29% between March and October 2025 as compared with the same period last year.

Shipments to India as leading destination, however, show an 11% dent. This is in line with the general trend for Asia and Oceania as a region as exports to here have dipped by 10% this season. By contrast, exports to Turkey have risen by 63% and have soared more than tenfold to the United Arab Emirates. The Middle East and Africa are, in fact, sporting a more than 100% uprise to 32,785 mt in shipments from Chile this season so far. Exports to Europe have risen by a much more moderate seeming 33% to 22,640 mt.

EU ups shelled walnut imports

Europe is the main export destination by far for shelled walnuts. In fact, Chile’s shipments have risen by 54% to 26,109 mt this season so far with the Netherlands and Germany showing impressive triple-digit gains. Contrary to this, shipments to Spain have declined by 10%. In the first three quarters of the year, the EU has, in fact, upped its spending on inshell and shelled walnuts by 60% to a record EUR 793 million (USD 918 million) as official EU import statistics show. While the USA account for 54% of this import value, Chile is next in line with 20%, followed by China with 12%.

Brazil und the United Arab Emirates are the only non-EU destinations for shelled walnuts in Chile’s top ten. Yet, exports to Brazil are 9% down on last year and shipments to America as a whole have even declined by 20% to 2,596 mt. By contrast, exports to the United Arab Emirates are 19% up. Shipments to the Middle East/Africa have even risen by 37% to 1,040 mt.
