Walnuts: Production falls short of expectations

SACRAMENTO/BUDAPEST. May was a rather disappointing month for the US export season as volumes declined to levels last witnessed in September. Volumes are also lower than in May 2018.

Slump in May

The US has shipped 320,432 mt of hulled and in-shell walnuts since the beginning of the season, an increase of 11% over the same period last year. Domestic demand climbed to 71,531 mt (+18%) and overseas shipments to 241,643 mt (+10%). May was, however, an exceptionally weak month as shipments dropped to 16,040 mt, 7,328 mt (+5%) to the US and 8,712 mt (-15%) overseas.
