For at least two decades, never has output reached 5,710,084 mt. Local prices under pressure because of supply growth in the Black sea region.

Wheat: the highest national output

SOFIA. Throughout the North regions, favorable weather conditions during the Winter and later during the Spring made possible for the soil to retain the necessary water reserves, which subsequently positively influenced the development of the crop. As a result, higher than expected yield potential was realized. In return, the yield pushed aggregate output to its highest level ever within a period of at least two decades.

This year’s average yield has been estimated at 5.26 mt/ha while that of last year came at close to 4.75 mt/ha. By the 10th of August 2017, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, aggregate production reached 5,710,084 mt, representing a harvested area of 99% out of total availability. Last year’s national output stood at 5,662,721 mt. This year, the country harvested 2.5% less arable land than it did during season 2016-17.

Regional competition exerts downward pressure on local prices

The growth of wheat supply, coming from the Black sea basin producers, has already influenced local prices. Harvest in Ukraine is coming to an end, and the newly collected crop is already entering the market while further pushing regional prices down. According to the recent USDA report on World Agricultural Production, Russian output is projected to come close to 77.5 mmt, which on a year-to-year basis is by 5.0 mmt more. In the short-term, prices are expected to follow a downward trajectory.
