As it seems, this year’s output will be higher than that of last season. Surprisingly, the higher average yield turned the wind in favor of farmers.

SOFIA. The great majority of the national output is harvested throughout the North regions of the country, with the Northeast region – the so called Granary of Bulgaria producing the highest quality crop.

Wheat: defying weather conditions

Hailstorms heavily “harvested” some fields in several regions throughout the country during the collection of the crop, yet they failed to substantially reduce the national output. The weather in the South regions of the country was not so favorable for the development of the crop early in the season, yet it failed to meaningfully cut down the aggregate output of the country.

Even though the Ministry of Agriculture expected an output of about 5,200,000 mt at the start of harvest -- this year’s planted acreages lagged behind those of the previous year by 2.5% -- the current average yield (5.2 mt/ha) did substantially increase the national output. Last year’s yield was estimated at 4.7 mt/ha.

A record production of wheat seems inevitable

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the 3rd of August 2017, 95% of total available acreages for harvest were combined. By that time, farmers filled the barns with 5,475,756 mt. Last year, aggregate production reached 5,662,721 mt.

A week ago, output was expected to be about 3% less than that of last season. Today, the forecast is still for 3%, but the difference goes in the opposite direction – 3% higher than output from season 2016-17. This year’s output could be the highest for at least a period of two decades.
