This year’s strong harvest of a higher quality crop, sold within a regional market of lower prices, is boosting export activities.

SOFIA. Prices this week have been somewhat stable, although since the beginning of the marketing season this year, prices have been following the regional bearish trend.

Wheat: the 3 highs of the season so far -- yield, quality and output -- boost exports

The final estimates of the Ministry of Agriculture for this year’s aggregate production place harvest of wheat at 5,760,756 mt. Last year’s output, which had been the highest for a period of at least two decades, reached 5,662,721 mt. Although harvested land in 2017 stood by 2.5% less (1,098,411 ha) than that combined in 2016, this year the country realized higher output because of prosperous weather.

The weather conditions throughout the year and before harvest, mainly in the North regions of the country, were quite favorable for the development of wheat and as a result, the yield potential of the crop was higher than that of last season. This year’s yield reached 5.2 mt/ha while that of last year came to 4.7 mt/ha.

The higher yield was accompanied by a higher quality crop, which on the background of competitive prices in the Black sea region, boosted export activities to all-times high. By the 3rd of September 2017, only via Varna seaport were shipped out to foreign countries 805,178 mt of wheat, which on a year-to-year basis stood by 32.4% higher.
