The weather in the North regions allowed many farmers to realize higher than expected yields. As a result, the country recorded the highest production figure for at least two decades.

SOFIA. What could have happened if hailstorms had not ravaged some fields -- mainly in the North regions -- during harvest or the weather conditions in the general South regions had been more favorable throughout the year? Some farmers have boldly suggested, provided natural calamities had not “harvested” through some fields in the country or the weather had been more auspicious in other regions, this year’s output could have well reached 6,000,000 mt.

Wheat: the highest aggregate output

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the 17th of August 2017, farmers harvested 99.4% of wheat fields. Estimated collected quantities stood at 5,740,727 mt while average yield reached 5.25 mt/ha. Although this year, harvested acreages were lower by 2.5%, the higher yield resulted in a higher national output. Last year, average yield was estimated at 4.7 mt/ha while production reached 5,662,721 mt. For at least two decades, the country has not produced such a high aggregate output.

Throughout the North regions, farmers already recorded higher quality crop this season. Actually, it was the North regions that raised the national output. In the Southwest and central South, regional harvests were weaker, with yields ranging from 3.0 to 4.0 mt/ha, because of adverse weather conditions during the Winter and the Spring. Competitive prices drive exports high on a weekly basis!
