CANBERRA/SACRAMENTO. Australia's almond exports set a new monthly record in August. China continues to show great interest in shipments from Australia. Californian almond farmers criticise official forecasting methods.

Shipments to China are catching up again

After exports weakened somewhat in July, which Australian Almonds attributed to optimistic crop estimates from California, exporters set a new monthly record in August. Around 16,764 mt of shelled and in-shell almonds were shipped overseas, almost 5% more than in August 2024. Domestic deliveries were in the upper mid-range for the month at 2,391 mt.

This brought the total to 19,155 mt of almonds (+4.3% year-on-year) delivered domestically and to overseas markets. Although shipments to EU countries such as Germany (+255% to 465 mt) and Spain (+53.6% to 298 mt) recovered year-on-year, overall fewer Australian almonds were exported to European Union countries this season. Turkey is by far the most important customer in the Middle East, increasing its imports from Australia by 117.7% to 579 mt in August and by 30.5% to 5,578 mt for the season as a whole.

US tariffs continue to have a major impact on trade with China and India, which is benefiting the Australian almond sector. In August alone, 12,716 mt of almonds (+45.8%) were exported to China, with total shipments increasing by 6.1% year-on-year to 43,789 mt. India's imports from Australia declined significantly in August, but buyers showed increased interest in in-shell almonds, and India's imports for the season as a whole increased by 11.9% to 12,212 mt. In total, around 88,837 mt of shelled and unshelled almonds were delivered domestically and overseas in the first half of the 2025/2026 season, representing an increase of 2% over the same period last year.

US farmers criticise official forecasts

California almond farmers are sceptical about the official crop forecasts and a production of 3 billion lbs or 1.361 million mt. Unofficial estimates, meanwhile, are between 2.7-2.8 billion lbs or 1.225-1.270 million mt of shelled almonds. Growers cite unfavourable weather conditions as one reason for this, which led to lower yields and a very mixed crop. Another problem is that some cultivated acreages are no longer being farmed and do not appear as such in the statistics. Not every producer reports to the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) when they abandon plantations, and due to the immense costs of clearing these acreages, they are incorrectly counted as cultivated land. This can distort the forecasts. However, according to satellite data from Land IQ from April this year, the area of productive almond plantations amounted to 562,000 hectares, which is largely consistent with NASS data. The actual results of this year's US almond crop are not expected to be available until December/January.
