SOFIA. The climate prevents the mass cultivation of the nut throughout the country. Some farmers already complained of lower collected quantities.

BULGARIA. Farmers, whose orchards received waves of unexpected frosts earlier in the year, are already cutting down their initial estimates. A farmer complained of frosts waves that hit his orchard five times in a sequence. Soon the results will become crystal clear.

Almonds: Is there a real threat to locally grown almonds?

BULGARIA. The real potential threat to local farmers are they themselves since they offer (compete on) quality while imported almonds – the Californian ones – compete only on lower prices. Yet, for them to become a real threat to each other, it will take years since the country does not have a long history of cultivating almonds, as it does for walnuts, for instance.

In addition, if its counterparts – the walnut and the hazelnuts are usually spread throughout the country, the almond, as a tree, grows well in regions where the climate is more like that of the Mediterranean. Such a natural prerequisite restricts the cultivation of the nut to specific regions – Southeast and some central South regions within the country. Yet, the favorable climate in those regions allow the cultivation of several varieties.

There are about ten varieties of locally grown almonds within the country, but the most widely cultivated are Nonpareil, Start, Primoski, a few varieties of Nikitski, and Asparuh. Only the larges farmers cultivate all of them, which are a few throughout the country, as the smaller ones, having orchards of a few hectares, grow two or three of them. Farmers sell in mix.
