MADRID. The current almond prediction from the National Bureau of Nuts has thoroughly upset optimists' plans, as they are no longer speaking of 70,000 mt.

Altogether, Spanish farmers are looking forward to a much better almond crop than last year, but the previous market expectations will probably not be fulfilled. Actually, the estimate from the National Bureau of Nuts of about 56,510 mt is only slightly below previous expectations of at least 57,000 mt – some were even talking about 70,000 mt. Nonetheless, the almond crop is expected to be 23% bigger than in 2016, and Andalusia has replaced Aragón this year as Spain's main growing region.

Price trend persists
According to the National Bureau of Nuts, the effects of the spring frost and the lack of precipitation are responsible for the crop prospects being good instead of very good. For this reason, the prices for Spanish almonds are maintaining the downward trend of the last few weeks.
