SACRAMENTO/MADRID. The Almond Board of California has published its March Position Report. In addition, forecasts were made for the Californian almond crop in 2019.

Good forecasts for 2019/20
As market participants report, the Californian almond harvest is largely in a better condition than last year around this time. Only a few farmers report that the rain and the cool temperatures during the pollination phase had a negative influence on their almond trees.

According to latest data, Californian almond production in 2018/19 produced a result of 1.027 million mt, a slight increase over the previous year (1.024 million mt).

The first estimates for the 2019/20 almond crop have also been made. Experts assume that 1.112 million mt of almonds will be harvested in the coming season. Further crop forecasts will follow in the coming days and weeks.

Weak March exports
In March 2019, 4.6% US almonds were delivered compared to the same period of the previous year. Domestic consumption shrank by 4.9% and export volume by 4.1%. Since the beginning of the season, a total of 720,724 mt of US almonds have been delivered both domestically and abroad, a decline of 2% compared with the previous year. However, while domestic consumption in this period reached 221,047 mt (+3%), exports fell by 4% to 499,677 mt.

Important customer countries such as Spain (+5% to 59,885 mt), Germany (-20% to 34,097 mt) and China/Hong Kong (-31% to 47,609 mt) significantly reduced their imports. At the same time, the Netherlands, for example, increased imports of US almonds by 28% to 22,271 mt this season.

Frost and hail in Spain
According to the Spanish news page Agroinformación, the frosty temperatures have moved further south and have now reached Andalusia after Castilla-La Mancha. In the regions around Maria and Chirivel, 70% are said to be affected by the frost damage. It remains to be seen how big the actual loss will be. Typical April weather is causing problems for the almond and fruit trees. Rain, hail and frost are the order of the day.
