MADRID/SACRAMENTO. The bacteria Xylella fastidiosa is continuing to spread in affected areas in Spain. It has now spread to shrubs such as chamomile and rosemary.

Production is still set to increase

Reports state that 16,620 infected almond trees had to be uprooted already and that approximately 55,800 trees will follow. The ASAJAAlicante (Association of young growers in Alicante) points out that the removal of the trees will not suffice, it is rather the insects that carry the bacteria which need to be confined. Replanting is also important to curtail the impact on the environment and the economy. Almond varieties, which are more resistant to the bacteria should be preferred.
