MADRID/SACRAMENTO. Although almond exports in Spain and the US are not quite as bad as anticipated, the market still has a lot of catching up to do if the perfomance is to be as good as last year. Spot market prices are on the move in Europe.

Exports down in Spain

Spain exported 87,949 million pounds (39,893 mt) of almonds between August and October, which is nearly 9% down on the same period last year. While shipments to France have only nominally declined, slumps are being reported in shipments to other EU destinations such as Germany, Italy and Belgium and the Netherlands. Shipments to Russia have, by contrast, risen sharply by 36%. At 32 million pounds (14,532 mt) monthly shipments even ranged 20% lower in October than last year.

US shipments take another hit

Crop receipts only reached 2.151 billion pounds (975,310 mt) on 30 November as California Almonds report. Although this is 7% down on last year, the figure is still on track to meeting the forecast 2.60 billion pounds (1.18 million mt). California Almonds also indicates that total supplies presently range 2.44% higher than last year at 2.94 billion pounds (1.33 million mt), which is mainly attributed to the high carry-in supplies.

Although exports exceeded expectations in November, they still ranged 9% lower than last year at 142.697 million pounds (64,726 mt). Domestic shipments also declined by 5% to 61,598 million pounds (27,941 mt) in November and total shipment by 8% to 204,296 million pounds (92,667 mt). Total exports for the season reached 835.590 million pounds (379,018 mt), which is 4% down on last year. Not only did domestic shipments decline by 6% to 244.356 million pounds (110,838 mt) but overseas shipments also declined by 3% to 591234 million pounds (268,179 mt). Although shipments to India ranged 17% lower, the country maintained its position as leading export destination for US almonds, followed by China and Hong Kong, Spain and the United Arab Emirates. While demand is clearly up in Spain, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey as well as in the Netherlands, this failed to compensate for the declines in Asia. Grand total shipments range 4% lower than last year at 835.590 million pounds (379,018 mt).
